Aeroplane chess
Aeroplane Chess is a narrative video work, played on a single screen. Aeroplane Chess is a Chinese board game similar to the Western game of Ludo and the Indian game of Pachisi. Players send their pieces (planes) from the starting point (tarmac) to the terminal by throwing dice. When a player moves to a desired place with another player's piece standing, the later player 'captures' the earlier piece, and the captured piece returns to the tarmac. The film portrays the daily social scene of international students in London. By focusing on different levels of English proficiency, it presents the impact of language on self-presentation, social performance, and a glimpse into the logic behind understanding and approaching the hegemonic language of English as a non-English speaking resident. The characters in the film are set to be from China, Japan and Croatia - three countries that play different roles in a specific historical period. In the heated phase of the globalized economy and the finals of the world hegemony battle, the communication between different ideologies is reduced to a calm and homely board game, behind which the competition of adaptability (both local and transnational) lurks.
