You Have Made It is a sculpture that ridicules the societal conventions in the Chinese society. For many Chinese, owning a spacious home in a metropolis and having graduated from a prestigious university are the only indicators to determine whether a person is successful or not. In which, the two requires a lumpsum of money to obtain. Therefore, people often find themselves being laden with the expectations from the society and from their families. Financial burden is ineluctable as well. With the figures in the sculpture bearing the weight of the humongous dollar sign, an academic cap and an apartment flat, the sculpture encapsulates the heaviness of the burdens that every member of the Chinese society has to bear. The golden sculpture also resembles a trophy, which it acts as a token to congratulate those who have achieved “success” in accordance to the societal conventions.
Mixed media, 59 x 30 x 30 cm, 2021
