Januario Jano

Bassula
Bassula, the title comes from Kimbundu (a language spoked by the Ambundu ethnic group from the northern part of Angola), it stands for a traditional type of wrestling fight that was extracted from “Capoeira” also with its origin rooted to Angola. I was interested in the parallel between the rituals and how it impacted relationship (personal, social, cultural and political) and the unfold truth about the colonial influence on local culture. Thus, I start to realise how Angolans preserved and appropriate some of the colonial practice (Christianity rituals mainly), which has a vast presence throughout the country, and its manifestation propagated vividly during the period of post-independence. My approach started with a poetic nostalgia of the past which collided with the imagination of the future, the present lay the ground for these conditions reconciles with self. The attempt to explore these conditions, create or imposed upon us, gives me the perfect light to understand how powerless we became. Therefore, the self is no longer in charge.
