Working image of four Channels arranged next to each other
A Boxing ring traditionally has four corners. One opponent is fighting out of the red corner, the other is fighting out of the blue corner. As a working class phenomenon, throughout the 19th century until halfway through the 20th, Boxing can be seen as a response to capitalist exploitation in an industrialized society. Unlike a factory worker the boxer was his own master, relying only on himself and his abilities in the ring. Prize fighting in London for many boxers was the only alternative to stealing in order to survive the precariousness of the docklands. When I first arrived in the East End of London in September 2014, I was struck by rising property prizes and by the incredible amount of boxing gyms surrounding me. I decided to take a stance, leave my own comfort zone and join Fightzone Gym. By now I am training three to five times a week. In the gym our individual position within a certain group outside the gym, our roots in a local community, our birth place in a specific country, and our ethnic background do not matter anymore.
